An alternator is a indispensable part of a dg set. An alternator refers to a mechanical device that converts other forms of energy into electrical energy. It is driven by a water turbine, a steam turbine, a diesel engine or other power machineries to convert the energy produced by water flow, air flow, fuel combustion or nuclear fission into mechanical energy and transmit it to the alternator. It is then converted into electrical energy by the alternator.

Genset Alternators

There are many forms of alternators, but their working principles are based on the law of electromagnetic induction and the law of electromagnetic force. Therefore, the general principle of its construction is: use appropriate magnetic and conductive materials to form magnetic circuits and circuits that conduct electromagnetic induction with each other to generate electromagnetic power and achieve the purpose of energy conversion. Alternators are usually composed of stators, rotors, end covers and bearings. The stator is composed of a stator core, a wire package winding, a base and some structural parts. The rotor is composed of rotor core (or magnetic pole, magnetic yoke) winding, guard ring, center ring, slip ring, fan and rotating shaft. The stator and the rotor of the alternator are connected and assembled by the bearing and the end cover, so that the rotor can rotate in the stator and cut the movement of the magnetic lines of force, thereby generating the induced electric potential, which is led out through the terminal and connected in the loop to generate current.

There are many types of alternators. In principle, they are divided into synchronous alternators, asynchronous alternators, single phase alternators and three phase alternators. From the ways of production, they are divided into steam turbine alternator, hydroelectric alternator, diesel alternator, gasoline alternator, etc. From the energy point of view, they are divided into thermal power alternators, hydropower alternators, etc.


History of Alternators.

In 1832, Hippolyte Pixii (French) invented a hand-cranked DC alternator. The principle is to generate an induced electromotive force in the coil by rotating a permanent magnet to change the magnetic flux, and output this electromotive force as a DC voltage.

In 1866, Siemens (Germany) invented a self-excited DC alternator.

In 1870, Gramme of Belgium made a ring armature and invented the ring armature alternator. This kind of alternator uses water power to rotate the alternator rotor. After repeated improvements, it obtained an output power of 3.2kW in 1875.

In 1882, Gordon (the United States) produced a giant two-phase alternator with an output power of 447kW, with a height of 3 meters and a weight of 22 tons.

In 1896, Tesla's two-phase alternator began operations at the Niagara Falls Power Plant. alternating current with 3750kW & 5000V has been sent to Buffalo, a city 40 kilometers away.
