Possible Reasons and Solutions When Diesel Generators Fail to Stop Running

02-06-2021

Normally, when the mains power is restored, the ATS will switch from the diesel generator set terminal to the mains power terminal, and then the diesel generator set will still run for a period of time (usually around 45-90s according to the setting). This is normal situation. The diesel generator set will automatically stop after cooling for that period of time. But sometimes we find that the unit cannot be shut down. Hereby we will talk about the possible reasons and solutions when a diesel generator set fails to stop running.

1. The solenoid valve malfunction

Solution: If the solenoid valve of the dg set is not working, you can check whether the wiring is accurate. Replace the solenoid valve if necessary.

2. The governor failure

Solution: If the unit cannot be shut down because of the malfunction of the diesel engine's governor, find professional maintenance personnel to deal with it, or replace the governor.

3. Operation error

Solution: someone may turn off the power switch (or key switch) before push the stop button of the controller. If so, just follow the normal procedure, press the stop button first and then turn off the power switch (or key switch).

4. The fuel and air filters are blocked

Solution: Check and replace them regularly.

5. Controller failure

Solution: Check and repair the unit controller according to the controller instruction manual.

Push the emergency stop button if necessary. This will stop the generator (unless someone has disabled the connection or the wiring is loose).

Summer in the northern hemisphere is approaching and the temperature rises. The frequency of diesel generators will increase. We must do the necessary maintenance work for diesel generator sets at ordinary times, so that the use of diesel generators will not be in a hurry and cause one or another failure.

1. Regularly inspect and maintain diesel generator sets. Carefully check and adjust valve clearance, fuel injection pressure, fuel supply time or others on a regular basis, and promptly eliminate scale and dirt on the cooling water jacket.

2. Remove carbon deposits in time. When the diesel engine is running, the relevant parts generate high temperature during the combustion process, causing the ash carbon polymer to adhere to the valve, valve seat, fuel injector, piston top, etc. Failure to clean it in time will increase fuel consumption and seriously affect the normal operation of dg sets.

3. Regularly remove some minerals or impurities deposited at the bottom of the tank after use. If it cannot be cleaned regularly, it could affect the normal operation of the plunger and the fuel injection head, resulting in inaccurate fuel supply time, uneven fuel supply, poor fuel atomization, etc., resulting in increased fuel volume.

4. Maintain a certain water temperature. The cooling water temperature of the diesel engine is maintained at about 45 degrees to 65 degrees. Too low water temperature will cause incomplete diesel combustion and increase the load on the machine itself. Cooling water should not abuse sewage, muddy water or rainwater.

5. Don't overload. Overload operation causes a considerable part of diesel to become black smoke, failing to exert its effective performance, increasing fuel consumption, and shortening the service life of related parts.
