Classification & Development of Diesel Engines

1. Classification

Engines are divided into external combustion heat engines and internal combustion heat engines. Diesel engine is one type of internal combustion heat engine. Internal combustion heat engines can be divided into gasoline engines, diesel engines and gas engines.

a. External combustion engines:

Power generation is completed outside of the cylinder. For example, a steam engine is a kind of heat engine burning fuel in a boiler outside of the machine and transferring the high-temperature and high-pressure water vapor produced by heating the water in the boiler to the inside of the machine, so that the heat energy can be converted into mechanical energy.

Diesel Engines

b. Internal combustion engines

Power generation is completed inside of the cylinder. Usually, they are divided into gasoline engine, diesel engine & gas engine, among which diesel engine is divided into low-speed engine (under 800rpm), medium-speed engine (800-1500rpm), high-speed engine (over 1500rpm).

classification & development

2. Development

In the 1890s, an efficient, compression ignition, internal combustion engine was invented by Rudolf Christian Karl Diesel (German).

Diesel Engines

Currently, the diesel engine technological development is divided into five stages:

a. Diesel engine with direct injection: diesel is directly injected into the cylinder through a single-hole linear fuel flow;

b. Diesel engine with embolism injection & fuel mechanical control: it is widely used until now and it is the first milestone in diesel engines' development;

c. Diesel engine with turbocharged injection;

d. Diesel engine with electronic control injection;

e. Diesel engine with high-pressure common rail fuel system & electronic control.
